With all the electric-car news from the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, maybe it’s time for somebody to pull a Phoenix move and get the Electric automobile company started again.

Maybe it’s time for somebody to fire up the old Detroit Electric automobile company. That entity was the last major producer of electric-powered vehicles from Detroit, and its last car was delivered in 1939. With all the electric-car news from the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, maybe it’s time for somebody to pull a Phoenix move and get the company started again.

GM will “assemble” battery cells provided by other manufacturers into arrays for GM’s own hybrid and electric vehicles.

At the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, GM’s Mr. Rick Wagoner took center stage with a near-production version of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt (and the Volt’s battery array, to Rick’s right). The Chairman announced the following:

Get ready for Earth Day: Fuji uses CES to unveil new green battery tech.
Fuji Unveils New Green Battery Technology - Consumer Electronics Show, Fuel Efficient News, Car Features and Reviews - Automobile Magazine
Fuji recently announced its new line of EnviroMAX batteries at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). These batteries eschew harmful materials and boast a production/manufacturing process that boasts a reuse/recycle rate of 92%.

It’s a like pumping 91 octane fuel into your muscle car that gets 14 mpg and exhales through pipes without catalysts … that’s the feeling your author gets as he ejects another set of AA batteries from his camera or other digital device. Even when I toss them into the recycling bin, I feel guilty for somehow contributing to the ill health of Mother Earth.

24 Hours of LeMons: Jay Lamm – The Lemon King
Jay Lamm - Road Racing Series - Automobile Magazine
With the 24 Hours of LeMons, a send-up of endurance racing open only to junkers that cost less than $500, Jay Lamm has created the country’s fastest-growing road-racing series.

With ten LeMons races slated for 2009, have you become the Bill France of road racing?
More like Groucho Marx. I didn’t intend to get into the racing business. But I’d been an automotive journalist, and anything was better than that.
