On a dry track, the S2K’s lead would be further exemplified. I own an 03′ S2K, and the Potenza “S” series are reknown for being poor on wet surfaces (although the s03’s are better than s02’s). Just as reference a standard S2K (of any year and engine designation) tends to run 0-100km/h in 5.8 – 6.2 seconds, and 0-400m in 13.7 – 14.4 seconds. The new MX5 runs 0-100km/h in around 7.9 – 8.2 seconds and 0-400m in 15.7 – 16.2 seconds. A world of difference.

The new MX5 is nowhere near as fast as the S2000. If you guys watch the clip closely, the S2K driver was short-shifting and commenting on the MX5’s handling characteristics (so he stayed behind), not to mention the MX5’s erratic handling held the S2K AND the RX8 back a few times in the race. Once the S2K hits the front and goes for broke it immediately hails a commanding lead. Just look at the lap times at the end as proof. 3.5 – 4 seconds difference is a raping on a track as small as Tsukuba.
